NextLesson: 21st Century Learning and Real World Projects to Engage Students

NextLesson is a marketplace to discover and manage 21st century projects. It was started by parents, is guided by teachers, and built for students. The folks over at NextLesson are dedicated to the task of building a better tomorrow by working on one simple, driving question, “How can we unleash projects students love?”

I became affiliated with NextLesson just a few months ago, but I could see the potential in the site right away and the passion of those behind the scenes.

The site offers free and priced lessons and projects for all grade levels. Projects on this site offer a unique component as they are very interactive for students and highly engaging.

Math, English Language Arts, History and Science resources are available and are searchable by topic, grade level and the Common Core (which I know is important for those of you who are knee-deep in CCSS).

New resources are constantly being added and are created by teachers, for teachers. Sign up is free and takes just a moment! And guess what?

NextLesson has agreed to give one of you a $25 gift card to the site! How awesome is that?

All you have to do to enter this giveaway, is sign up to NextLesson. Then, just enter below for your chance to win! Easy-peasy!

Back to School Giveaway Lessons From The Middle

Using Independent Films as Texts in Your Classroom

I don’t know about you, but I’m always on the lookout for a great inspirational video to show my kids, and I have found a few good ones this year. Recently, I’ve been looking into some good sites for independent films that I can show to my students, which either provide a  text for discussion or written response in Language Arts, or that cross over with some of our outcomes in Social Studies and Health. I wanted to share a site that I found which looks pretty promising!

The site is called indie flix and I will tell you up front that it is a paid subscription site. That being said, indie flix has been generous enough to offer Lessons From The Middle TEN, 2 month subscriptions to share with you! How awesome is that? I’ll simply email the ten winners from the Rafflecopter widget below a redemption code and they will not be required to enter any credit card information. Winners will have two months to preview thousands of films from all over the world. Films are rated by age (although you should always preview a video before you show it to your students) and there are films from all genres and on many topics.

Let’s face it. It’s getting to “that” time of the school year when you just want to tear your hair out when students begin to lose their focus, and it can be difficult to keep everyone on pace until the end. That’s why I’m pretty excited! There are many great films on the site that you could use as texts in your classroom to base a discussion around or a writing assignment.

Using Independent Films as Texts in Your Classroom, indie flix, finding kind

Finding Kind is a video currently on free preview until May 24th, and I plan to show it to my students. It’s focused on the epidemic of girls bullying girls.

In February 2009, two young women, Lauren Parsekian and Molly Thompson joined forces having both been affected by female bullying throughout their youth and decided to create change by giving females a platform to speak out about this universal experience. What began as an idea for a documentary about girl-against-girl bullying, ultimately became Kind Campaign, an internationally recognized movement, documentary, and school assembly program based on the powerful belief in KINDness that brings awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-against-girl “crime.”

This is just one video on indie flix. As I said, there are thousands of films and although all are not appropriate for the classroom, but many are! There are films on everything from parkour to poverty, and all that’s needed is a teacher to see how the film could be effectively incorporated into her room.

I think that this is the perfect time of the school year to receive a two month free preview from this independent films site! Two months will take us to the end of the school year, and films on controversial or simply interesting topics will hold our kids’ attention when we need it most! Not to mention, the preview will run into the first weeks of summer.  What teacher wouldn’t want to curl up with a cup of coffee and thought provoking film on a rainy July afternoon? I can’t think of any! Wink

Would you like to receive a 2 month subscription to indie flix? Enter below!

Please feel free to share any independent film sites that you use, in the comments below, as well!

Celebrating My First Blog Birthday with a BIG Giveaway! $500 in Resources and Gift Certificates to be Won!

Celebrating my first Blog Birthday - Lessons From The Middle

**~** This giveaway has now ended. Thanks everyone for making it such a success! The winners have been notified and I’ll wait to hear back from them before I post…**~**

I can’t believe it’s been a year!

I had no idea when I began Lessons From The Middle a year ago, that I would learn so much and meet so many amazing teachers in such a short span of time. I’ve said this before, but the connections and ideas that I get from all of you are simply awesome and I know that they have made me a better teacher. For this, I thank you.

Now, let’s not waste any time getting to the good stuff. I was taught that it’s better to give than to receive. So…. of course I’ve got a giveaway for you!

So many generous teachers and teacher-bloggers have donated their products and gift certificates for this giveaway (you all rock, by the way) totaling about $500 which is simply incredible!

There are NINE prize packages to be won, based on grade level (keep in mind that some items are grouped in one grade level, but may also be appropriate for other grade levels as well – a bit higher or a bit lower). You may enter to win all nine prize packages, or just the ones most suitable for your grade level.

I’ve decided to keep the prize packages a bit of a mystery – a birthday surprise for the winners, if you will. SO, you’ll know the grade level, approximate value and general contents of each package, but not the exact items until you win! Fun, eh? Think of each prize package as a beautifully wrapped birthday gift just begging to be opened! Who doesn’t like a little mystery?

In addition to the NINE prize packages, donated by 95 teachers and teacher-bloggers, there will also be TWO $50 shopping sprees in my TeachersPayTeachers Store to be won. To qualify to win one of these, simply comment on this blog post as one of your entries in the prize package(s) of your choice. Then, I’ll use a random number generator to choose TWO lucky winners from those comments.

I couldn’t have done this without the generosity of all of the contributors for this giveaway – again thanks so much for helping to make my blog-birthday extra special! Follow them in their TPT Stores, blogs and on Facebook; they are amazing educators with so much to offer (plus these follows earn you more chances to win, of course).

PLEASE NOTE: Just in case you’re new to Rafflecopter, clicking the “Follow Me” link on the widget doesn’t automatically follow the stores and blogs of the contributing teachers. It takes you to the store or blog and it’s up to you to follow once you’re there. If it’s a TPT Store, click on the red “Follow Me” above their name. If it’s a blog, look for how to follow them on the side bar – usually there are a few options. When you “Like” a Facebook link, it is automatic and then you can enter.

Also, each of the nine giveaways will have a winner. Therefore, you’ll need to enter in each of the prize packages that you’d like to win. For example, entering to win Prize Package one, will not enter you to win the awesome resources for Gr 7-9 in Prize Package two.

Mid Winter Mad Money Giveaway

I don’t know about you – but I’ve had a week from hell. It started off with finding out that my “privacy was breached” due to a stolen hard drive at my Student Loan Agency – me and 583 000 other borrowers…Class action pending… THEN I dumped coffee on my laptop (typing this from my Mom’s).
My point? I could use a pick me up! And what’s the best way to make yourself feel better? By doing something nice for others! So… despite my stressing (and depressing week) I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this giveaway hosted by The Tutor House.

Some of my amazing bloggy friends and I have teamed up for this Mid Winter Giveaway – just because! We are giving away not one, but TWO $75 gift certificates to TeacherspayTeachers. Per-ty awesome, huh?

This giveaway runs from January 18th and goes until 11:59 PM CST January 21st.

All of the contributing bloggers for this giveaway are listed below. You’ve heard me talk about many of them before, but if you haven’t had a chance to follow them – go check them out! You can earn extra entries for following these lovely folks.

Oh yes…one more thing. Last Friday I had a flash giveaway for a product from my TPT Store. I’d like to throw that out there again today! I’ll run it until the 21st as well. Some of the other bloggers in this giveaway are doing something similar – all the more reason to visit each one! What a Great Day! Flash Giveaway for you!

Well I had a fantastic day with my kiddies today. They finally got their individual novels for their book clubs and everything is humming along smoothly. They are continuing to enjoy our read aloud and are beginning to understand the purpose of a Reader  Response. The highlight? I had a disengaged student who genuinely does not enjoy school, complete the assigned reading and response. He actually asked if he could write “some stuff down” as he was reading! Umm…ya!! You can take some notes if you want. I tried not to look directly at him…I didn’t want to spook him. Anyway, it was a thing of beauty! I take things one day at a time with him, so I know that tomorrow could very likely be a different story. But hey – today was a good day!

On top of that, I introduced a game in math that I created for my students. They LOVED it! They didn’t want to stop playing. The laughs and engagement were genuine. It was so gratifying – totally worth the time it took me to make it. AND it was a practical assessment for me. As I walked around, it was easy to identify who was struggling with the concept and who “got it”.

Because I had such a great day, I’ve decided to spread the joy. I’m having a FLASH GIVEAWAY until tomorrow evening.  As a prize, you can choose any product from my TPT Store! I actually just recently posted a few new products, including the game that my students really enjoyed today, entitled, Mine!

Want to Win a Nook?

I just found this great giveaway and so I thought I’d write a quick blog post to share!

Tips For Teachers is having a holiday giveaway. There are many resources to be won, donated by teachers (which is a whole lot of awesomeness) but what I’m really hoping for is the Nook that they’re offering! I can just imagine curling up with a new read over the holidays and also sharing this fabulous piece of technology with my grade sevens in the new year. I hope I win…but I’m just so thoughtful, that I had to share the giveaway with you guys too!

Good luck, and of course, let me know if you win…
